The primary objective of the proposed solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant at the Golden Baobab MFEZ in Kafue District is to augment the national grid’s capacity, addressing the current energy shortfall, and to establish a localized, dependable power source within the district. By implementing such large-scale renewable energy projects, private entities can significantly enhance the national installed capacity, thereby improving the security and reliability of the country’s power supply.
The benefits to be realised by the Project would include:
i. Mitigation of power deficits;
ii. Contribution of 468.8 GWh to the national grid per annum;
iii. Foster socioeconomic development in Serenje District;
iv. Creation of direct and indirect jobs; and
v. Contribute to Carbon Emission Reductions (CERs).
The Golden Baobab MFEZ Solar PV Power Plant aligns with Zambia’s Vision 2030, which aims to transform the nation into a prosperous middle-income country by 2030. A key objective of this vision is to provide all communities, both urban and rural, with an adequate and reliable supply of electricity at affordable rates, thereby promoting sustainable socioeconomic development and reducing poverty. Furthermore, the Zambian government has set a target to increase the non-hydro renewable energy mix, including solar and wind, to 30% by 2030. This initiative seeks to diversify the energy sector and reduce dependence on hydropower, which currently accounts for 85% of the energy mix.
