The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MFL), under the Department of Fisheries (DoF), is
implementing the Zambia Aquaculture Project (ZAP). The ZAP is a European Union (EU) grant
funded project, with a period of implementation from August 2022 to July 2026. The overall
objective of the project is to support the government’s policy to reduce rural poverty and
malnutrition and improve rural livelihoods. The purpose of the project is to increase productivity,
income, and employment opportunities of emergent, small, and medium-scale fish farmers. This
Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is an activity under ZAP. It has been prepared to provide
a baseline of the environs in areas with aquaculture potential, and to establish the environmental and
social impacts that aquaculture is likely to have on these areas. Apart from the SEA and other
activities funded by the ZAP, the production of a geospatial map which shows areas in Zambia
where aquaculture activities can be established or enhanced was also undertaken under ZAP.
