SEA – Kafue Zambezi Community Forest Project (KZCFP) Western Province by Legacy Forests – BCP

Legacy Forests1, a Zambian registered company intends to implement the Kafue Zambezi Community Forest Project (KZCFP) in the sixteen districts of Western Province of Zambia. The proposed KZCFP will be implemented along two of the most important rivers in Zambia which are the Zambezi and Kafue Rivers. The sixteen districts where the project will be implemented include: Sioma, Mulobezi, Mwandi, Lukulu, Kaoma, Sesheke, Shangombo, Senanga, Nalolo, Luampa, Mitete, Nkeyema, Kalabo, Sikongo, Limulunga and Mongu Districts. The implementation of the proposed project is in partnership with the traditional authorities and the Government of the Republic of Zambia.

The aim of KZCFP is to enhance conservation of the forest catchment areas of the Zambezi and Kafue rivers and the near continuous wildlife corridors between KNP and other national parks.
The Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Report is a key document prepared to identify potential social and environmental impacts from the implementation of the KZCFP, including proposed mitigation measures. It outlines the rigorous consultative process that preceded and informed the evaluation of programme alternatives. The report serves to inform decision-makers about the social and environmental aspects of the programme and the available policy frameworks for managing the impacts.

The SEA was conducted according to the Environmental Management Act No.12 of 2011 and Environmental Management (Strategic Environmental Assessment) Regulations, Statutory Instrument No. 48 of 2021. It has been prepared in line with the World Bank Operational Standards for SEA.
