PROPOSED MILOSO DAM AND BULK WATER RETICULATION PROJECT INMKUSHI DISTRICT

Agriculture is crucial for the social and economic development of Zambia. Approximately 80 percent of the population relies on agriculture, and around 70 percent of the labor force is employed in this sector. However, agricultural production in Zambia is highly susceptible to fluctuations in seasonal rainfall. Over the past few decades, droughts have negatively impacted agricultural productivity, leading to food insecurity that threatens the livelihoods of 80 percent of the population. To address this issue, the Government has been actively promoting investments in irrigation schemes to support sustainable agricultural development. The Mkushi river flood period flows have been identified as viable source to supplement the Tembwe and Munshiwemba. It is hoped that up to 1,100ha of irrigated land could be supplied directly from the Mkushi river and the remaining 3900ha within the Mkushi farm block via the cross-catchment schemes. (1030ha in Upper Munshiwemba catchment and 1500ha in Tembwe catchment and 1370ha in the middle to lower Munshiwemba.) Miloso Dam Company Limited (MDCL) was registered on the 5th of May 2024 as a private company limited by shares. The intends to construct the Miloso Dam and a Bulk Reticulation System. The proposed dam is located approximately is located about 25km southeast from the Mkushi CBD and about 15km downstream of the existing Clem Dam.
