EIS – Development Of The Proposed Nsongwe – Mukuni 50 Mw Photovoltaic Solar Farm In KAZUNGULA DISTRICT By Masansa Power Company Limited

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Masansa Power Company Limited proposes to develop a 50 MW ground-mounted, grid-connected, solar
photovoltaic (PV) plant (the “Mukuni Solar Park”) in Shungu Ward of Kazungula District. The proposed
site for the project is located approximately 5 km from Livingstone in the Southern Province of Zambia.
The area covering approximately 152 hectares of land has a central coordinate of 17°53’57.28″S,
25°54’27.14″E. The footprint of the Mukuni Solar Park will also include an estimated 0.4 km right-of-way
(RoW) for the transmission route through which the plants will be connected to ZESCO’s Mukuni
330/220/66 kV substation across the road. The project area of influence is anticipated to spread into both
Livingstone and Kazungula districts as the site lies near the boundary of the two districts.

The Nsongwe-Mukuni Solar Park is Masansa Power’s response to the Government of the Republic of
Zambia’s (GRZ) policy initiatives and calls for private-sector investment in the power sector. GRZ, in its
efforts to augment the energy mix with other renewable forms of energy, has issued policy directives that
have enhanced private sector participation in the energy sector through IPPs. This aims to improve
infrastructure development in the energy sector. IPPs currently cover 22 % of Zambia’s total generation
installed capacity; this percentage is set to increase with several MoUs recently signed by the government for the implementation of various proposed Solar and Wind Power Projects.
