Bilateral cooperation between Zambia Environmental Management Agency and the Swedish Chemicals Agency

Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) is since August 2020 cooperating with the Swedish Chemicals Agency (KEMI) to strengthen the capacity of the authority and improve the management of pesticides. The project is a part of the Swedish Chemical’s Agency´s development cooperation and is supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). The cooperation will run from 2020 to 2024 and the Swedish Chemicals Agency has a long-term expert based in Lusaka to support ZEMA on a daily basis.

The overall objective of the cooperation is to contribute to reduced risks from pesticides to human health and the environment and it has the following focus areas:

  • Support for establishment of a registration process for pesticides where the products’ effects to human health and the environment are assessed            before the agency takes a registration decision
  • Support for improved management of highly hazardous pesticides at ZEMA
  • Support for establishment of an IT system for registration of pesticides and further development of information on ZEMA’s website
