The Government of the Republic of Zambia, through the Ministry of Tourism, is implementing the Green, Resilient and Transformational Tourism Development Project (GREAT-TDP) with support from the World Bank. One of the priority areas identified for sustainable tourism development under this programme is Kasaba Bay and surrounding areas, located in Nsumbu District, Northern Province, along the southern shores of Lake Tanganyika. In line with national environmental legislation and international best practice, a Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment (SESA) has been undertaken to guide the preparation and implementation of the Kasaba Bay Destination Plan. The SESA ensures that environmental protection, social inclusion, and climate resilience are fully integrated into tourism planning at an early, strategic stage. This summary presents the key findings of the SESA for public information and disclosure, in accordance with the Environmental Management Act No. 12 of 2011 and the Strategic Environmental Assessment Regulations (Statutory Instrument No. 48 of 2021), subject to issuance of a No Objection by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA).
