Southern Province has the highest coal belts in Zambia. The coal deposits are located in the MidZambezi Valley. The most recent estimates of the resources at Maamba Mine, the largest producer, is 166 million tonnes at Izuma and Kanzinze Basins. Currently active exploitation of coal is at Izuma Basin and Nkandabwe by Maamba Collieries Limited (MCL) and Collum Coal Mining Industries Limited (CCMIL) respectively. The other coal field within the Zambezi Valley include Mulungwa, Siankondobo, Chisanga and Siambabala. There are two major coal mining companies in Sinazongwe: namely Maamba Collieries Limited in Maamba and Collum Coal Mine in Nkandabwe. Maamba Collieries Limited (MCL) has the largest coal mining concession and since its commissioning in July 2016, the thermal plant is producing 300 megawatts which is feeding into the national grid. As a result of these mining activities, there has been change in land use patterns from the initial land use (mining and agriculture) to new residential settlements due to people searching for employment.
