PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF A DAM WALL ON SINDE RIVERON FARM No. 11A IN LIVINGSTONE DISTRICT OF SOUTHERN PROVINCEd BY VIRGIN ADVENTURES LIMITED

In Zambia, the tourism sector has grown significantly over the last few years, becoming one of the best economic earners in addition to mining and agriculture. This growth has been driven by the availability of key resources, including the natural beauty and diverse wildlife of the country, as well as a supportive infrastructure for tourism. However, the poor rainfall pattern in the past years coupled with high drought levels especially in Southern Province are becoming a threat to the sector. There is an urgent need to ensure resource conservation such as water which can consequently be for wild animals’ natural use and contribute towards attracting tourists.
Zambia has vast potential for sustainable economic development through effective exploitation of
its natural resources. One of these areas of potential growth is through the exploitation of its vast
land resources via creating facilities that will help conserve wildlife in the country. Further,
Government of the Republic of Zambia has previously expressed intentions to make the tourism
sector an economic earner, especially in light of instabilities in copper prices and the fact that
mining is a non-renewable resource. As a result, the Zambian tourism industry has experienced
significant growth over the last decade. However, this growth has been impacted negatively by
reduced rainfall due to climate change, highlighting the need for developers looking to establish
large-scale tourism ventures to invest in infrastructure such as water harvesting ventures for wild
animals’ natural use purposes.
