Poor waste and e-waste management practices is particularly acute in Africa, where environmental monitoring and regulatory enforcement are relatively weak, and present serious threats to human health. The mismanagement of waste and e-waste in Sub-Saharan countries have devastating impacts at the regional scale. The release of Unintentional Persistent Organic Pollutants (UPOPs) from the inappropriate disposal of waste and electrical/electronic waste (e-waste) can travel long distances and cause environmental and health impacts across country borders.
To respond to this urgent need, the project “Africa Environmental Health and Pollution Management Program” (EHPMP) will implement a regional approach to improve the management and reduce exposure to mercury and UPOPs. The five countries benefiting from this project are Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Senegal, and Zambia. The project is financed by a grant provided by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the World Bank as an executing Agency. Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) is the implementing Agency of the Zambian Component on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Zambia.
The EHPMP in Zambia will address environmental health risks from pollution associated with solid waste and e-waste management. For Zambia, the main objective of the project is to reduce uPOPs release in pilot sites and strengthen the institutional capacity to manage and regulate solid waste and e-waste. The project consists of four major components.
Component 1: Institutional strengthening, knowledge and capacity building.
Component 2: Policy Dialogue and Regulatory Enhancements.
Component 3: Demonstrating application of technological tools and economic approaches for reduced environmental health risks due to solid waste and e-waste (centres of excellence for technology demonstration).
Component 4: Project Coordination and Management.
