ZEMA APPROVES PROJECTS WITH AN ESTIMATED INVESTMENT OF USD440,129,973

The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) wishes to inform stakeholders, partners and the general public that during the month of March 2017, a total of 83 Environmental Impact Assessment (EIAs) reports were considered from various developers and sectors across the country. The consideration of the projects was done in accordance with the Environmental Management Act No. 12 of 2011 (“EMAâ€) and the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, Statutory Instrument No. 28 of 1997.

Out of the 83 projects considered, 67 projects were approved, 12 were deferred, two project documents were upgraded from Environmental Project Brief to Environmental Impact Statement and two projects were rejected. The deferred projects are pending additional information from the Developers. The Agency approved projects with an estimated investment of USD440,129,973. The break-down of the estimated investment is as follows:

It can be noted that submitted projects have been mainly from the Energy and Urban Development sectors. The total estimated investment for projects considered by ZEMA between January and March, 2017 is therefore, USD1,205,153,298.

All projects are approved subject to specific conditions within a given timeframe. ZEMA’s decision can be withdrawn without notice should a developer fail to comply with laid down conditions and commitments.
