EIS: Proposed Tilapia Aquaculture Project on Lake Kariba in Siavonga Distict by Zamgreen Agriculture Limited

Zamgreen plans to develop a tilapia aquaculture project in Gwena-Butete area in Nabutezi Ward of Chief Simamba’s Chiefdom in Siavonga District. The site is located on the shores of Lake Kariba and is 32 ha in extent. The project will involve development of a fully integrated cage culture fish farm and fish processing operation. The company intends to produce Tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus) in floating cages on Lake Kariba and plans to set up 1,000 floating cages to produce 10, 000 tonnes of fish annually. At full operation, the project will have achieved the following:

• 50 breeding and 50 nursery ponds to produce 50 million fingerlings;
• 1,000 floating cages to be able to produce 10, 000 tonnes of fish annually; and
• Approximately 300 staff employed.

Therefore, Zamgreen proposes to construct 50 breeding ponds of 20m x 2m to grow 50 million fingerlings. The fingerlings will then be transferred to nursery ponds for stabilization and the primary stages of growth. Once the correct strength and size is reached (3-5gms), the fingerlings will be transferred to floating cages on the lake where they will remain until harvest, approximately 8 months later.
