REVIEW OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR THE PROPOSED GOLD MINE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
IN CHIPATA DISTRICT BY PENDWE MINING COMPANY LIMITED
Pendwe Mine Company Limited proposes to develop a gold open pit mine and processing plant to be situated 37 km south east of Chipata town in Entongeni Village on Vubwi Road. The mine will cover a total area of 126 ha with an open pit mine covering 30 hectares. The Company envisages to process 800 tons of auriferous ore per day using the heap leach method. Three separate ore pads (approximately 1,500 square meters combined) will be located north west of the pit and will have storage capacity of up to 6,000 tons of mineralized material.
The project activities will involve constructing a concentrator with facilities to process auriferous ore into gold ingots, constructing and operating a heap leaching pad for leaching out gold from the auriferous ore pulp, constructing and managing a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF). Other activities will include mining of the ore body and processing of ore (including drilling, blasting, and excavation), transportation of product to ports of exit for export and progressive reclamation where possible.
This notice therefore, serves to inform members of the general public, interested and affected parties that an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report for the aforesaid proposed project in Chipata district has been received by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) for review. In line with the provisions of the Environmental Management Act Number 12 of 2011 (EMA) as read with the EIA Regulations Statutory Instrument No. 28 of 1997 and is available for scrutiny at the following places:
1. ZEMA, Information and Documentation Centre in Lusaka;
2. Chipata City Council;
3. ZEMA website: www.zema.org.zm; and
The report will be available for inspection during office hours from 09:00 hours to 16:00 hours. Interested and affected parties may send their written submissions to the undersigned not later than 26th March, 2019.
